Sunday Afternoon Vespers

Evening vesper services are held each Sunday at 5pm at the Church of the Holy City except during the summer months.  Services are held in the tradition of the Swedenborgian Church, an open-minded, forward looking Christian denomination drawing its faith from the Bible as illuminated by the teachings of Emanuel Swedenborg (1688-1772). Swedenborg uncovered deeper meaning in the Bible revealing a guide to spiritual growth and the inner journey toward the new self.

Services last about 45 minutes and include an opportunity for audience discussion of ideas raised in the minister’s sermon.  Services are followed by a coffee hour in the parlor.

Services are held in the Church of the Holy City located at 16th and R Streets in Washington, D.C.  The church was constructed as the Swedenborg national church in the 1890s.  The building contains many special features, most notably stained glass windows, some of which were designed by Tiffany.  For more on the church architecture, click here.

Herbert Langford Warren (1857 – 1917) designed the Church of the Holy City in Washington, DC. This Swedenborgian church, built in the years 1894-96 and 1908, stands in the midst of what is now the 16th Street Historic District neighborhood in Northwest Washington. Warren founded the School of Architecture at Harvard (now the Graduate School of Design) and was a charter member and long-time president of the Boston Society of Arts and Crafts.
